Ladies, let’s talk about a situation that is all too familiar for many of us: acne at 30. I know, it's frustrating and can even impact your confidence. You might have thought your skin troubles would be over after your teenage years (*flashback to middle school and high school skin nightmares*) but here you are, still dealing with breakouts.
But I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to struggle with acne forever! There's hope to combat your acne at 30, ladies! As a holistic women's nutritionist, I've helped numerous women address their acne by using approaches that go beyond just the typical creams and products…the key is getting to the ROOT of your acne and finding out what’s causing it on a cellular level.
Understanding Your Type of Acne
First, you need to understand the type of acne you're dealing with. Some of us might be dealing with hormonal acne, which is often linked to our menstrual cycle (and why you break out every time right before your period), while others might have cystic acne, which goes deeper into the skin and can be quite painful.
Hormonal Acne: This type of acne often shows up during menstrual cycles due to hormonal fluctuations. These changes can cause oil glands to overproduce, leading to pimples and even painful cystic acne. I see this a lot with my clients who struggle with hormonal imbalances.
Whiteheads: These are small bumps on the skin caused by clogged pores. When oil and dead skin cells block a pore, it leads to the formation of these white or yellowish blemishes.
Blackheads: Similar to whiteheads, blackheads are also formed due to clogged pores. The difference is that blackheads are open at the surface and turn black due to exposure to air.
Why Creams and Products Are Just a Band-Aid Approach to Acne at 30
Let’s chat about why creams and products shouldn’t be your only “solution” to combating acne at 30. I know it’s so tempting to reach for the newest product on the shelf or that an influencer is promoting that promises to zap your zits in no time.
But here’s the thing: these skin creams and products are often just a band-aid solution. They might work in the short-term, but they don’t address the root cause of your acne. It's just a matter of time before your acne comes back again, and again, and again.
Also I want to mention quickly the fact that many acne creams on the market contain toxic ingredients that not only fail to address the root cause of acne but may also lead to more health issues in the future. These toxins accumulate in your body, adding to your "toxic bucket", which can overflow and manifest in various symptoms, including persistent acne. Surprise, surprise. While clean, non-toxic acne creams can be used while the underlying imbalance is corrected, this shouldn't be your sole long-term approach.
This is why you need a holistic approach to find lasting relief from that dang acne! What most women don’t realize is that their gut and hormone health are highly connected to skin health. If your gut or hormones are out of balance or aren’t working optimally, it can contribute to acne!
By looking at your overall health, including your gut and hormone balance, we can work on addressing the root cause of your acne.
How Functional Medicine Lab Testing Can Help Address Your Acne
Now, let’s talk about one of my favorite tools in helping my clients get answers and find out what’s actually contributing to, or causing the acne to manifest in the first place: comprehensive functional medicine lab testing!
Functional medicine lab testing can help us identify any gut or hormone imbalances, dysfunctions or even infections that might be contributing to your acne. And once we know what’s going on inside, we can create a personalized plan that is most effective in helping you heal on a cellular level and get rid of your acne and skin issues…for good!
Benefits of Gut Testing for Acne at 30
Imbalances in your gut microbiome – like bacterial overgrowth, a lack of beneficial bacteria, yeasts, or even parasites – can trigger inflammation and mess with nutrient absorption. Both of these issues can lead to persistent acne. It's not just about what you're putting on your skin; it's also about what's happening inside your body.
This is where functional medicine gut testing comes in. By taking a closer look at your gut health, we can uncover what's really going on. Are there specific bacteria that are out of balance? Is yeast overgrowth contributing to inflammation? Are there parasites affecting nutrient absorption? Knowing these details helps us create a personalized treatment plan to restore balance.
This often involves making some dietary changes, incorporating high-quality probiotics, and possibly using natural antimicrobials. These steps can help improve not just your gut health, but your skin condition as well. Keep in mind – your skin is usually a reflection of what’s going on in your gut.
Functional medicine gut testing is key because it goes beyond the surface to address the root cause of your acne. It’s about understanding the relationship between your gut and your skin and finding a solution that works from the inside out. By targeting the source of the problem, you’re more likely to see long-lasting improvements in your skin health.
Benefits of Hormone Testing for Acne at 30
Your hormones significantly influence your skin health and honestly, most women’s hormones are out of balance because of a number of things (toxic beauty products, pesticides, toxins in our food, water and air).
Imbalances, especially in sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, can trigger oil production and skin cell turnover, leading to blocked pores and acne. This is often the case with conditions like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), where heightened androgen levels lead to skin issues.
With my clients, I use advanced at-home hormone testing, usually a urine test, to gain a complete look at your hormone status. This includes examining the levels of various hormones and their metabolites, offering insights into how your body is producing and processing these hormones.
Based on these findings, we can create a plan to balance your hormones naturally that includes dietary changes, stress management techniques, supplements, to restore balance and help clear your skin.
Remember, when we address the root causes of your acne, it's not just about improving your skin - it's about enhancing your overall health.
